Atlantis: Truth or Myth? Unveiling Secrets with Modern Satellites
For millennia, the tale of Atlantis, the legendary island with a splendid civilization that vanished beneath the ocean’s depths, has captivated and haunted the human imagination. Did Atlantis truly exist, or is it merely a fictional narrative crafted by Plato? With the advancement of satellite technology, we are closer than ever to deciphering this enigma.
From Plato to Satellites: The Quest for Atlantis
Plato, in his works “Timaeus” and “Critias,” depicted Atlantis as a mighty naval power, situated “beyond the Pillars of Hercules” (the Strait of Gibraltar), that was submerged in a catastrophic day and night. This account was based on the stories relayed by Egyptian priests at Sais, who had recorded ancient legends.
Thanks to the superior observation capabilities of modern satellites, scientists have discovered unusual geological traces in the Strait of Gibraltar region and off the coast of Mauritania. Satellite imagery reveals:
- A colossal river: Over 7,000 years ago, a vast river flowed from the Atlas Mountains, traversing what is now the Sahara Desert, and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. This river created a large “island” in the coastal region of Mauritania, believed to be the heart of Atlantis.
- Ancient topography: Subsea topographical features suggest that the Canary Islands were once part of a land bridge connecting the “island” to the Iberian Peninsula (Spain). The melting of glaciers at the end of the last ice age caused sea levels to rise, submerging much of this land.
- Cadiz, Spain: Plato mentions Cadiz as part of the Atlantean territory, and geological studies indicate a strong connection between this region and the “island” in Mauritania.
Unanswered Questions Remain
While these new discoveries have shed light on many aspects of the Atlantis myth, several questions remain unresolved:
- Chronology: Egyptian records suggest Atlantis existed around 11,600 years ago, coinciding with the end of the last ice age. Could Atlantis have been a civilization that predates our known civilizations?
- The collapse: Plato describes Atlantis being submerged by earthquakes and tidal waves. Was there a natural disaster that caused this collapse, or were there other contributing factors?
- Ancient knowledge: How did the Egyptian priests possess knowledge of the ancient topography of the Gibraltar and Mauritania coastlines, before the advent of satellite technology? Did they inherit knowledge from a more advanced civilization?
Atlantis: Lessons from the Past
Whether Atlantis truly existed or not, its story serves as a cautionary tale about the fragility of civilizations in the face of nature’s power. It also ignites curiosity and the desire to explore the mysteries of the past, prompting us to delve deeper into our own history.
