NBA Reacts to Nikola Jokic's Historic Season Before Playoffs

It has been another incredible season for Nikola Jokic. The 30-year-old from Serbia has again put up stats that make NBA fans jump out of their seat.

The second-round draft pick back in 2014 is set to wrap up the regular season this weekend with the Denver Nuggets. The postseason picture will be set following the games on Sunday.

The Nuggets will head into Sunday’s tilt in Houston in fourth place in the Western Conference, tied with the Los Angeles Clippers at 49-32. If the Nuggets win, they will earn the No. 4 seed. A loss, depending on other results, could drop Denver as low as seventh and into the play-in tournament.

With the postseason right around the corner, the NBA is acknowledging some of the incredible accolades from the season. And Jokic’s numbers put him exclusive company.

The official NBA X account posted this Saturday morning: “More history for a special player. Nikola Jokić is the 3rd player in NBA history to average a triple-double for an entire season, joining Russell Westbrook (4x) and Oscar Robertson!”

Jokic helped Denver win the NBA title in 2023 and was named Finals MVP. Jokic is also the reigning league MVP, having won the award three times in his career.

Russell Westbrook is now a teammate of Jokic in Denver. The last time he averaged a triple-double was during the 2020-21 season with Washington.

That season Westbrook recorded 22.2 points, 11.7 assists and 11.5 rebounds per game. Westbrook won one MVP award in 2017, the first time he averaged a triple-double.

When Oscar Robertson averaged a triple-double during the 1961-62 season, he put up 30.8 points, 12.5 rebounds and 11.4 assists.

The 2024-25 MVP award will be announced during the NBA playoffs. Jokic is expected to contend along with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
