Archaeological Impact: The Head of Aphrodite Resurfaces After Thousands of Years in Aizanoi, Türkiye

Aizanoi, with a history dating back 5,000 years and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012, is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders. The city, located 50 kilometers from the center of Kütahya, was the main settlement of the Aizanite people in ancient Phrygia. Throughout the Hellenistic period, the region experienced changes of dominion, alternating between Pergamum and Bithynia, until finally falling under Roman rule in 133 BC. c.

Professor Gökhan Coşkun, who has shared details of the recent findings with Anadolu Agency, has led the archaeological work at Aizanoi. The excavation team, which has been working since last April, has uncovered more than 100 pieces of statues, including the extraordinary heads of Aphrodite and Dionysus. These heads, some of which belong to statues between 2 and 3 meters in length, were first discovered three years ago and have been preserved in a remarkable state of preservation.

“The most exciting development for us this season is discovering new heads of the goddess of love and beauty, Aphrodite, and the deity of wine, Dionysus,” Coşkun said.

The ongoing excavation at Aizanoi has also unearthed other important artifacts, including 2,000-year-old makeup products and jewelry discovered in September.
