The Los Angeles Lakers definitely have one of the best duos in the NBA in LeBron James and Luka Doncic. Unfortunately, it takes more than two players to win a title, and the Lakers’ playoff performance in the first round is proof of that.

The Minnesota Timberwolves made easy work of the Lakers in the first round because, despite adding one of the NBA’s best players at the NBA trade deadline, the roster was too flawed for them to go on a substantial playoff run.

Hence, the Lakers will definitely search for some upgrades during the offseason. Los Angeles will look for upgrades up and down the roster. It may even turn to alumni of sworn rival, the Boston Celtics, for help.

A Defensive Dynamo to Address Lakers’ Needs

Marcus Smart's return to Boston a reminder of Celtics' defensive culture he helped build

Marcus Smart, the 2022 NBA Defensive Player of the Year, is no stranger to high-stakes playoff basketball. During his tenure with the Boston Celtics, Smart was a cornerstone of their defensive identity, helping lead the team to multiple deep playoff runs, including an NBA Finals appearance in 2022. Known for his tenacious defense, playmaking, and clutch performances, Smart could be the missing piece to complement the Lakers’ star-heavy lineup.

Since being traded to the Washington Wizards in 2023, Smart’s playing time has been limited, appearing in just 54 games over the past two seasons due to injuries and a lack of fit with the rebuilding Wizards. However, a healthy Smart, now 31, still possesses the grit and versatility to make an immediate impact on a contending team like the Lakers. His ability to guard multiple positions, facilitate on offense, and bring a winning mentality aligns perfectly with Los Angeles’ need for a reliable supporting cast around James and Doncic.

The Odds Favor Los Angeles

According to Bovada, the Lakers have emerged as serious contenders to land Smart, with odds of +200 to be his next team, trailing only the Sacramento Kings at +150. The Wizards, who are in the midst of a rebuild, have little incentive to retain Smart, making him a prime trade candidate this offseason. For the Lakers, acquiring Smart could address their defensive shortcomings and add a battle-tested veteran to a roster that struggled to match the Timberwolves’ physicality in the playoffs.

While the details of the negotiations remain under wraps, the Lakers are reportedly exploring multiple trade packages to secure Smart’s services. Los Angeles may need to part with draft picks or young talent to make the deal work, but the potential reward of adding a player of Smart’s caliber could justify the cost.

A Rivalry Rekindled?

The prospect of a former Celtics star donning the purple and gold is sure to raise eyebrows, given the storied rivalry between the Lakers and Boston. However, the NBA landscape is ever-changing, and Smart’s addition could signal a new chapter for Los Angeles as they aim to reclaim their spot atop the Western Conference. The Lakers’ front office, led by Rob Pelinka, is known for bold moves, and acquiring Smart would be a statement of intent as they look to build a championship-caliber roster.

What’s Next for the Lakers?

While LeBron James and Luka Doncic form one of the league’s most formidable duos, the Lakers learned the hard way that star power alone isn’t enough to secure a title. The addition of Smart, with his defensive prowess and playoff experience, could provide the balance Los Angeles needs to make a serious run in 2026. As negotiations heat up, the NBA world is watching closely to see if the Lakers can pull off this blockbuster move.

If the deal comes to fruition, the Lakers could emerge as a revitalized force in the Western Conference, ready to challenge the likes of Minnesota, Denver, and other playoff contenders. One thing is certain: the NBA is on the verge of a shake-up, and the Lakers are at the center of it all.
