The Los Angeles Lakers are expected to explore every option when it comes to potential fits at center. Both Jaxson Hayes and Alex Len are set to hit free agency, leaving the Lakers without an answer to the position. Although one could argue that even with both centers on the roster, the team was still lacking an answer. This was certainly the case in the postseason when the franchise was desperate to get anything from Hayes. It was the best example of why a move must be made and where the Lakers will focus attention in the 2025 offseason.

It isn't just rim protection that the Lakers must add, but consistent lob threats. A pivotal piece of Luka's game relies on the ability to keep the defense guessing when attacking. It was a huge part of the Dallas Mavericks' Western Conference Championship win a season ago. With this in mind, the Lakers should consider simply turning the clock back to a player they know will work perfectly with the franchise star.

Gafford is a likely trade option when considering the contract situation and the Dallas Mavericks having an overwhelming number of options at the position. The deal adds back picks for Dallas and brings in a potentially valuable wing defender. Vincent has had an up-and-down Laker tenure, but would fit perfectly for a team that is built around size and defense.

The pending addition of Cooper Flagg only lends itself more reason to believe this team is going to shed a center and bring in an additional wing defender or two. This move does just that while adding a future first-round pick in the process.

For the Lakers, you're adding a proven piece that is going to work perfectly with Luka. While it isn't elite rim protection, it bolsters your size and offense. Gafford is a willing rebounder as well, happy to mix it up on the inside with bigger bodies. This is the exact type of attitude and energy the Lakers were missing in their frustrating playoff exit.

When considering possible trade targets, few make as much sense as the current Maverick. It is a deal that benefits both sides and allows the Lakers to start off the 2025 offseason in the right direction.
