This discovery was made by archaeologist Dr. Martina Bardonova in Aswan, a historically important city located on the banks of the Nile.

She led a Spanish research team that studied the reign of Hatshepsut, Egypt’s first female pharaoh. During the excavations, they found an unopened grave in the rocks. Channel 4’s ‘Secrets of Egypt’s Valley of the Kings’ revealed how experts carefully excavated the tomb surface before opening the tomb, making impressive progress despite the harsh conditions.

The narrator said, “Martina discovered the sarcophagus, which was still hidden from the public.

“But first he had to get to the grave – a sandstorm blew from the south.

“As the sandstorm progressed, the 200-meter journey to the grave also turned into a battle.

“In the shelter of the tomb, the team was able to slowly remove the lid from the limestone sarcophagus.

“They wanted to know if anything had survived after almost 4,000 years.”

When experts tried to open the sarcophagus, he seemed worried about its appearance.

He commented: “It’s very hard, but be careful, it looks very scary.

“It’s like a horror movie, when this mummy starts moving, I run as fast as I can.

“It’s a very creepy mummy – it’s not really a mummy – it’s just put here, but not tightly packed.”

The series described how more experts were brought in to better understand the find.

He added: “There is no mummy in the sarcophagus, but a skeleton wrapped in black material.

“Expert Dr. Miguel Cecilio Botella López arrived to analyze the skeleton.

“They hope to find out who that person was and how they prepared for the afterlife.”

After removing the sheaths, Dr. Botella revealed to the team that it was a woman.

He added: “I’m sure it’s a woman. Age, I’m not sure, but over 70 years old.

The team was surprised by their estimate because people in ancient Egypt usually didn’t live long.

High infant mortality due to infection risks led to a low average life expectancy.

Those who survived childhood, however, lived a little longer.

Dr. Bardonova continued in 2019: “The average life expectancy was about 25 years, but many women died during childbirth.

“When someone is over 70, I don’t want to say I’m surprised, but it’s nice to know someone has lived a very long time.”

Tutankhamun is one of the most famous pharaohs of ancient Egypt, but he is believed to have only lived to be 18 years old.

Human remains are still the primary source for age and lifespan calculations, as written and visual data are scarce.

Sometimes the age of death can be found as part of the mummy tags.

Secondary evidence of aging includes legal documents where a person is sometimes referred to as an “elderly person”.

In ancient Egypt, the elderly were defined as older adults who could no longer work.

Egyptian writings indicate respect for the elderly, but the elderly did not have a special position in society.
