In a Surprising Turn of Events, an Ancient 600-Ton War Submarine Was Transported by Road to a Museum in Germany, Defying All Imaginable Logistical Expectations.
Kübler, in collaboration with the technology museums in Speyer and Sinsheim, transported a 330-ton submarine from Speyer to Sinsheim, Germany, in about 30 minutes.
The submarine, which was loaned by the German Navy, will be accessible to the public at the Museum of Technology in Sinsheim and will be preserved for posterity.
The total weight of the vehicle was 529 tonnes and its length was 74.5 m.
The journey began on the road to the natural harbour of Speyer, continued by pontoon boat along the Rhine and Neckar to Haßmersheim and finally returned by road to the destination Sinsheim.
According to Kübler, the final 48 km section was particularly difficult and took two weeks due to the narrow bridges and villages.
Due to its height of 12 m, the submarine could not be transported upright to all locations. The solution was a special turning device that allowed the submarine to be tilted 73 degrees and brought back upright in tight places. In this way, it could navigate narrow places, often with only a few centimetres to spare. The submarine turned 14 times during the route.
Last year, Kübler transported the submarine from Kiel to Speyer to put it on display outside the Speyer Technical Museum.
